Why a tree as FutureCorps’ logo, you ask?
For our first post it seems fitting to explain the meaning behind our logo. At the outset the FutureCorps team wanted a logo that represents our values. We wanted a symbol that evokes deep feeling and a common connection, one that is nurturing and inspires us to take action. We wanted a logo that is rooted in common cultural traditions, representative of the best of the past, but symbolizing the hope in our future. When we developed our tree it just seemed right.
The tree is a deep-rooted universal, archetypal symbol that is held sacred in many ancient societies around the world. It represents knowledge, continual growth, and enduring strength. It also represents the blessing of nature and the stability and security in life that we can reasonably expect. The symbolism is apparent in metaphors that refer to a common heritage depicted in a family tree.
Trees are planted in many cultures in honor of an accomplishment or to mark an important stage in life. Trees are places of birth and the resting place in death; they are used as shrines and the site of rituals, ceremonies and celebrations. The most common cross-cultural and symbolic representation cites the universe’s construction as the tree of life.
Regardless of any metaphysical connections, a special relationship exists between trees and people. Both produce essentials that enable one another to exist: trees produce the oxygen we need to breathe, and we produce carbon dioxide necessary to sustain a tree.
